Toby Leigh artist YMCA provocation posters

I'm Glad It's Not Like This! (2016)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toby was invited to contribute to the Micro-Provocations initiative commissioned by
Architecture 00 and Central YMCA. 12 artists were asked to create a piece of work within the Central YMCA building that prompted users of the institute to reimagine and consider the meaning of wellness beyond the worn out clichés of health and fitness.

The YMCA is a friendly environment, welcome to all and free from the pressures of a typical macho health club offering a breathing space away from the relentless white noise that is modern life.

Toby created a series of fake propaganda posters and placed them in and around the YMCA.

The ridiculous and crude messages conveyed throughout this badly photocopied imagery represented every pompous health centre, exclusive members club, lifestyle coach or steroid induced personal trainer that the YMCA avoids being.

“Like a pantomime villain, they provoked a reaction but were overtly humorous and clearly not real. However, it was exciting for there to be some level of debate regarding their authenticity and for this to ferment a discussion on wellbeing and the role of the YMCA.”
